Known for being unafraid to experiment, he introduced the idea of mixing shrubs with herbaceous, and caused outrage among many when he grubbed up Dixter's rose garden to replant with tropical plants. Following the death of Christopher Lloyd in 2006, the garden is now run by his head gardener, Fergus Garrett, and a charitable trust.

Beautiful as usual - Great Dixter is open and looking fantastic! Despite the wet, the garden was full of colour and interest. A great time to visit with everything in bud. The cafe has had a serious makeover too, with delicious cakes and scones. Interesting savoury lunch too. It all looked (and tasted) very home made and delicious.
